Medaka, Lame Red Gold Medaka - Japanese Rice Fish - Oryzias Latipes

Lame Red Gold medaka have a rich red-gold body with heavy metallic "lame" scaling that covers much of their body. The lame (pronounced lah-may) effect means they are covered in reflective scales that shimmer intensely under any light. They are one of the flashier medaka varieties and a real showpiece in any collection.

Medaka are hardy, peaceful, and easy to breed. They do well in nano tanks, ponds, and outdoor tubs, and they do not need a heater. I breed my medaka outdoors in QLD following the natural seasons, which produces tougher, more colourful fish. They are social fish and do best in groups of 6 or more.
