How I Breed Fish in Winter
Winter is the Perfect Time to Breed Fish Indoors!
Winter has us indoors, which makes it a great time to focus on breeding fish!
My not-so-secret formula?
Live Food + Fry Trays = Breeding Success
As the temperatures drop, breeding can become a little trickier, but it’s far from impossible. With the right tools and a bit of extra care, winter can be one of the most productive seasons for raising fry inside.
At Handpicked Aquatics, I’ve found that two things make all the difference: live food and fry trays.
Why Live Food Matters More in Winter
When water temperatures cool down, fish metabolisms naturally slow. That means they need nutrient-dense, easy-to-digest food to stay healthy and in breeding condition. This is where live food shines.
Whether it’s baby brine shrimp, daphnia, or vinegar eels, live food:
- Stimulates natural feeding behaviour
- Encourages breeding and egg production
- Provides ideal nutrition for growing fry
Live food keeps your breeding pairs active and your fry strong from day one.
Fry Trays: A Game-Changer for Raising Young Fish
The Lowell fry trays are shallow, stable containers that sit neatly in your tank rack or system. They're one of my favourite tools for successfully raising fry, especially in smaller spaces.
Fry trays allow you to:
- Monitor fry health and growth closely
- Feed more accurately (less waste!)
- Keep water conditions stable and clean
- Protect young fish from larger tankmates
They’re perfect for species like medaka, rainbowfish, rasboras, and danios—and make managing fry much easier, even in cooler months.
🔥 Pro Tip: Heat the Tank, Not the Tray
Rather than trying to heat individual small tanks or trays (which can be tricky and expensive), I recommend heating a larger aquarium or the whole fish room to a consistent temperature. This helps keep fry happy and water parameters stable.
