Black medaka have a deep, dark colouring that makes them stand out from the more common light-coloured varieties. They look particularly striking against lighter substrates and green plants, and they contrast well when kept alongside brighter medaka colours. A bold, understated variety with real presence.
Medaka are hardy, peaceful, and easy to breed. They do well in nano tanks, ponds, and outdoor tubs, and they do not need a heater. I breed my medaka outdoors in QLD following the natural seasons, which produces tougher, more colourful fish. They are social fish and do best in groups of 6 or more.
