Natural Sphagnum Moss 20g

Sphagnum moss is one of those things I always keep a bag of in the fish room. It holds up to 20 times its dry weight in water and releases it slowly, so it is brilliant for keeping humidity up in a terrarium without the substrate turning into a swamp. It also breaks down much more slowly than most organic material in a humid setup, so it lasts a good while once it is in place. A 20g bag is a handy size for a few small builds, a couple of isopod tubs, or keeping on the shelf for propagating.

This one is from Jurassic Natural, and it comes clean and ready to use.

What I use it for

• Lining the top of a terrarium substrate to hold moisture around plant roots
• Keeping a damp corner in isopod and springtail tubs, so your cultures have a humid retreat
• Wrapping the roots of ferns and other tubestock when planting into a build
• Propagating cuttings and plantlets
• Mixing into a substrate to keep it light and airy

How to use it

Soak the moss in clean, dechlorinated or rain water for 15 to 20 minutes until it is soft and fully expanded. Squeeze out the excess water so it is damp, not dripping, then pull it apart and place it where you need it. A little goes a long way once it is hydrated.

A few tips

• In isopod tubs, keep the moss to one side so your colony can choose between damp and dry areas.
• Isopods and springtails will graze on it slowly over time, so top it up with fresh moss now and then.
• Store unused moss dry in the sealed bag until you need it.

This is a terrarium and isopod product. It is not intended for use in aquariums.
