Medaka, Tricolour - Japanese Rice Fish - Oryzias Latipes

Tricolour medaka display a mix of red, white, and black patterning, giving each fish a unique and eye-catching appearance. Like kouhaku, every individual is different, which makes a group of them fascinating to watch. They are one of the most visually complex medaka varieties and a real collector's fish.

Medaka are hardy, peaceful, and easy to breed. They do well in nano tanks, ponds, and outdoor tubs, and they do not need a heater. I breed my medaka outdoors in QLD following the natural seasons, which produces tougher, more colourful fish. They are social fish and do best in groups of 6 or more.

• Temperature: 16–22°C (tolerates 3–42°C)
• Difficulty: Beginner-friendly
